Jamaica Patty Co. - Good Things

It seems Covent Garden has another bringer of Jamaican fresh flavour and influence in the form of Jamaica Patty Co.

When it comes to menu, the stars of the show are of course those melt-in-the-mouth patties, freshly baked in-store every day, with a variety of deliciously spicy fillings including jerk chicken, prawn, curried goat and saltfish and ackee.

JPC also delivers a fantastic selection of complementary Jamaican culinary delights throughout the day from a menu created by multi award-winning Jamaican chef Collin Brown.

Caribbean chef of the year Collin also delivers some mouth-watering speciality soups with a twist, including the likes of punchy pumpkin soup with a spicy kick, chicken and dumpling and gungo pea – perfect for a healthy lunch on the go.

As such, Jamaica Patty Co., whose passionate mission is to introduce the fresh flavour of Jamaica to as diverse a mix of customers as possible, is quite simply a breath of fresh air.

JAMAICAN-BORN Brit Theresa Roberts and husband Andrew have invested US$500,000 ($53.7 million) to start a Jamaican patty franchise in the UK with an aim to open up to 50 retail stores in the European country.

Jamaica Patty Co (JPC) will launch its first store in leased property at 26 New Row, Covent Garden, in the heart of London's entertainment and retail district, on March 15.

Along with seven different patty flavours, JPC will offer Blue Mountain Coffee, rum cake, soups, juices such as coconut water and soursop, and other Jamaican food items, Andrew told Caribbean Business Report yesterday from the Roberts' Tryall Country Club home in Hanover, Jamaica.

"The model is designed to tap into the growing UK trend for fast casual dining and has been designed to allow rapid expansion once the first store is producing an acceptable sustainable profit margin," said Andrew, noting that JPC is Theresa's brainchild.

A private equity lawyer, Andrew Roberts spent 25 years doing leveraged buy outs in the UK but said he now divides his time between the JPC project, his family's privately owned property interests and a couple of non-executive board positions with other companies.

London's Best Jamaican Food | Londonist

Classic hitters like hot jerk chicken, deeply satisfying curry goat and fried plantain are fairly ubiquitous in Jamaican London - though we've found the best - but there are also plenty of places taking a more modern approach with Red Stripe tempura prawns, jerk halloumi and codfish fritters.

With dishes this good available all year round - and not just in the Caribbean hotspots of Brixton and Dalston - why wait for the Notting Hill Carnival for your dose of Jamaican joy?

OK, so the guy behind Brixton based Fish, Wings and Tings - Brian Danclair - has a Trinidadian rather than Jamaican background, but Caribbean food has many shared, transferable flavours and south Londoner Brian describes his cooking as 'nouvelle Caribbean'.

If you can manage not to order their incredible jerk chicken then go for their traditional bone-in goat and mutton curry which is perfectly spiced - or at least order a curry goat patty on the side.

Their standout menu item 'It's a Wing Ting' describes itself as crispy coated Red Stripe poached Pterodactyl wings covered in a secret sauce of chilli, herbs, spices and honey and they're just a little bit good; they've competed with some of the best Caribbean jerk experts in the business.

The 12-cover site, situated on the former Spud site in New Row, will serve a broad selection of patties - which can be likened to Cornish pasties in style and contain various fillings and spices- all freshly baked by renowned Jamaican chef Collin Brown.

The concept is the brainchild of Theresa Roberts, who is making her first foray into restaurants with hopes to explore a ‘gap in the UK grab-and-go market’ for authentic Jamaican food.

“As soon as the first site’s settled, we want to push the expansion button and get this rolled out – we want to take Jamaica Patty Co all over Britain.

Jamaica Patty Co’s Covent Garden restaurant, which opens in mid-March, will offer jerk chicken, prawn, curried goat and saltfish and ackee-flavoured patties, with prices starting at £3.95.

Jamaica Patty Co will open at 26 New Row, Covent Garden, in mid-March.

Growing up in south London, I was never too far from a Jamaican patty.

You won’t find a south London letdown at Covent Garden’s new patty stop.

Instead, these patties are golden-hued, fresh from the oven and filled with anything from jerk chicken to prawns or curried goat.

Less successful was the ackee and saltfish patty with a filling too delicate to stand up to the taste or texture of its rich pastry wrapper.

Jamaica Patty is not the place to come for a leisurely lunch – the lighting is brash, the tables few and everything’s served in disposable packaging.
